Re-Mapping The Arab world 2013
Mapping has been an integral part of the human story for a long time, possibly up to 8,000 years. people have created and used maps as essential tools to help them define, explain, and navigate their way through the world. According to some scholars, mapping represented a significant step forward in the intellectual development of human beings and it serves as a record of the advancement of knowledge of the human race, which could be passed from members of one generation to those that follow in the development of culture. Maps began as two dimensional drawings. Although that remains the nature of most maps, modern graphics have enabled projections beyond that. The quality of a map's design affects its reader's ability to extract information and to learn from the map. Cartographic symbology has been developed in an effort to portray the world accurately and effectively convey information to the map reader. A legend explains the symbology or pictorial language of the map. When examining a landscape,
scale can be intuited from trees, houses and cars. Not so with a map. Even such a simple thing as a north arrow is crucial. It may seem obvious that the top of a map should point north, but this might not be the case.
Quantitative symbols give a visual measure of the relative size/importance/number that a symbol represents and to symbolize this data on a map, there are two major classes of symbols used for portraying quantitative properties. Proportional symbols change their visual weight according to a quantitative property. These are appropriate for extensive statistics. Choropleth maps portray data collection areas, such as counties or census tracts, with color. Using color this way, the darkness and intensity (or value) of the color is evaluated by the eye as a measure of intensity or concentration.
(Re-Mapping) belongs to the style of System Art, which is based on precise and organized mathematical elements. These elements when correlated by an organization , ensure the viewer cannot understand unless he or she can enjoy the nuances within.
(Re-Mapping) is a type of abstract art characterized by the use of very simple standardized forms, usually geometric in character, either in a single concentrated image or repeated in a system arranged according to a clearly visible principle of organization. In systems art the concept and ideas of process related systems and systems theory are involved in the work take precedence over traditional aesthetic object related and material concerns.
The strategy of the work is closely related to system, creating Map drawings for the Middle East countries including Iran, by following this system. Each Letter from (A-z) has a different Number, (a=1,b=2,…z=26), so the Letter A is different from the letter B. Two letters will make one point (a,b)= (1,2)= (X,Y). two points will make a line, any mistakes in this type of art cannot be admitted since the drawing diagram will break. There are mistakes that do not belong to the system. Each line is as important as every other line. All of the lines have become one thing: they create the shape of each country, This is systemic art. This is what I've chosen to create the new Middle East Art Map.
When I decided to make this artwork, I thought of how I could create a way to draw a new map using my unique view of the world , so I drew the outline shape of each county & transferred it to a 3D installation, according to earlier research results. The main idea is to show that art is affected in the same way as the life and world are by the economic crises, so for example each county will be have a different height as this will be according to the statistics real figures such as (number of contemporary art galleries & museums, number of art spaces, number of art programs at university level, number of art foundations, numbers of galleries participating in Dubai & Abu Dhabi Art Fairs, auctions ,…etc. ). I want to show that poorer countries are suffering more regardless of the causes of the global crisis and that the weak are always badly affected but have no voice to shout out loudly… but now the rich countries and people are being affected so it’s now world news…….How could the economic crisis affect art? If the economic crisis does become this century's Great Depression, how will art be changed? That seems hard to answer without also considering politics.
If this is the art scene of 2010, the question I wish to pose is; What will the 2020 Middle East Art Map look like?
Can the Arts survive the Economic Crisis? I’ve read many articles lately on arts funding during this severe economic downturn. Some are awfully pessimistic; others offer hope. But none have come directly to the issue that is at the heart of all fundraising success, and which is especially important for the survival of the arts in this crisis economy.
The case for the arts exists on its own merit. It is not apologetic; it does not take second place to healthcare or human services or education. The arts are as vital to life as breathing, food, shelter and health. If you work in development in the arts, please give yourself the right to break out, to make the commitment to not compromise, and the inspiration to capture the essence of what the playwright, the composer, the choreographer, the painter and the author are trying to communicate about the human condition.
What the arts can offer now, in a world full of anxiety and trouble, is even more vital…..
