My Phone’s Diary 2013
This piece of work tells the story of daily phone calls during a period of 40 days recorded in the form of telephone numbers which are presented in a sub-abstract form. During that time, I kept a running record of all the phone calls that I answered on a daily basis.
The paintings are done by converting the individual numbers of each phone number into geometric blocks in which each number is represented by the same number of blocks as well as having its own color represented. The numbers are placed in an organized fashion, by inserting the earlier received calls of the day first and continuing this process till the last phone call. Every painting contains the date on which the phone calls were received to document the progress of this phone diary.
Here the viewer experiences the artwork by reading the cubical map of the translated numbers, and in so doing they become the main story teller since there is no dialogue and in so doing, can create an air of ‘mystery’ since there are no words displayed in the selected phone calls.
The other part of the project is of an audio nature; a key board is provided and the viewer will hear the pressing of the keyboard numbers for each of the numbers while viewing the visual form of the art piece. The pressing of the number on the keyboard will represented by musical notes. This will create layers to the project in which the audience can experience more than one side of the story.
The installation will be placed in a darkroom, since the visual part of this piece will be in florescent colors; there will be 9 different colors, each of which will represent a specific number (0-9).
