Line 04
Although 'Line' seems to be a simple one-dimensional line, it paradoxically highlights a three dimensional reality. For one the line splits the picture in two, like the sky and the earth.
This work is a play on the Doppler Effect. Essentially, the Doppler Effect is the change in pitch resulting from a shift in the frequency of the sound waves, potentially due to relative motion. A common example of the phenomenon is the police or ambulance siren. As the ambulance approaches, the pitch increases as the wavelength diminishes and the opposite occurs when the ambulance is moving away. In this piece the source is stationary while the observer, through the video, is in motion.
‘Line’ gives the illusion that the observer is in motion through changes in the thickness of the line and the accompanying sound. This change entices the observer to move closer when he senses the motion of the line.
